Innovation Leadership

Innovation has been described as the fundamental source of competitive advantage. It is critical to the competitiveness of organisations of all sizes and in all sectors. Innovation is a dynamic, complex and open process, involving many players and parts of organisations. Managing innovation requires a sound understanding of the nature of the innovation process, a process that has changed radically over recent years. The purpose of this course is to equip managers with the skills necessary to lead innovation for sustainable competitive advantage. The course is based on international best practice in innovation leadership and presents an integrated framework from leading edge strategic management and innovation ideas to help managers lead innovation within their organisations.

Presenters

Dr John Steen
UQ Business School

John Steen is a lecturer in strategic management and a member of the Strategy research group at UQ Business School. His research and teaching focus within innovation leadership reflects an ongoing interest in intangible resources such as knowledge, ideas and information and the way they contribute to strategic leadership and sustained competitive advantage. He has applied his interest in risk and uncertainty management to developing business strategies with a range of blue chip corporate companies and is currently involved in a major international operation on understanding processes of innovation and strategic leadership.

Dr Jason Hall
UQ Business School

Jason is a lecturer at UQ Business School, specialising in corporate finance and investments. His research relates primarily to valuation, in particular the value of firms' options to expand or contract investment in response to signals about profitability and growth. He has provided corporate finance advice to clients which include Queensland Treasury, Alcan and the Australian Stock Exchange. Jason spent three years as an equity analyst with Credit Suisse First Boston after graduating from the University of Queensland in 1996 as a university medallist.

Dr Bob Westwood
UQ Business School

Bob Westwood researches and publishes in the areas of critical aspects of organisation theory, cross-cultural and international management, the sociology of work, gender and organisations, and humour in organisations. Bob's research is particularly concerned with the dynamics of change in the international context and he is Co-Editor of the journal, Culture and Organisation.

Mr Tim Kastelle
UQ Business School

Tim Kastelle graduated from Princeton University with a degree in economics. He has worked in marketing and management positions in a variety of industries including radio, office equipment, industrial chemicals, higher education and software. He recently completed an MBA (Advanced) the UQ Business School. Tim's research interest is in applying evolutionary economics to the management of firms. He is investigating the implications of viewing the economy and firms as complex evolving systems.

Credit for UQBs postgraduate student

Students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership may apply to undertake this course for credit towards their postgraduate studies. This course is equivalent to MGTS7702 - Learning Organisations. Students wishing to gain credit must undertake all items of assessment. Please contact UQBS Student Administration via email: postgrad_enquiries@business.uq.edu.au to confirm your eligibility and to seek approval to obtain a credit prior to enrolling in the course. All other UQBS postgraduate students interested in enrolling in this course for credit, should contact UQBS Student Administration.
