Leadership Development for Asian Business Leaders


May 2009

This course has been developed in response to the recognized need by The University of Queensland Business School to provide a comprehensive leadership development program with an Australian accent for Asian leaders and managers. It will provide participants with the opportunity to learn about contemporary business and government practice in a uniquely Australian context.

The program covers the broad leadership and management spectrum in Australia, from the development and implementation of Australian public policy and programs, the operation of markets and the activities of corporations in Australia, and the achievements of the Australian political system. It has been designed to build productive relationships and networking opportunities between individuals and organisations across Australia and Asia.

Presenters

Professor Tim Brailsford

Professor Tim Brailsford is currently the Professor of Finance and Foundation Head of UQ Business School at The University of Queensland. Prior to this appointment, Professor Brailsford was Dean of the Faculty of Economics & Commerce at the Australian National University and has held academic positions at the University of Melbourne and Monash University. He holds a PhD, Master and Honours degrees and is a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia, the Australian Institute of Management and CPA Australia. His academic area of expertise is in investments and valuation, corporate finance and financial management.

Professor Ken Wiltshire

Professor Kenneth Wiltshire AO is the J. D. Story Professor of Public Administration at UQ Business School. He is also the Australian Representative on the Executive Board of Unesco and a member of the Commonwealth Grants Commission. Professor Wiltshire's main research interests are in government-business relations, public sector management, governance, public policy, leadership, education and training, and comparative federalism. He has published a significant number of books, monographs, and articles in Australasia, Europe and North America.

Mr David Lyons

Mr David Lyons specialises in commercial law and in particular, banking and finance, major projects, general corporate and property law. David has extensive experience in syndicated loans, multi-jurisdictional debt finance, commercial financing, capital markets and all aspects of corporate, trade, agricultural and business finance. David is President of the Hong Kong Australia Business Association in Queensland and works with government departments in Australia and China in relation to trade and investment in the region and regularly hosts functions on doing business with and in Asia.

Professor Victor Callan

Professor Victor Callan is an authority in the field of organisational change, leadership and employee performance and is highly regarded for his research and management consultancy with both the public and private sectors. He is the author of nine books on issues related to people and transition. Professor Callan has been a management consultant for over 20 years, working with some of Australia's best known organisations. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Australian Institute ofManagement and the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia.

Dr John Steen

Dr John Steen is a lecturer in strategic management and a member of the Strategy research group at UQ Business School. His research and teaching focus within innovation leadership reflects an ongoing interest in intangible resources such as knowledge, ideas and information and the way they contribute to strategic leadership and sustained competitive advantage.

Credit for UQBS postgraduate students

Students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership may apply to undertake this course for credit towards their postgraduate studies. This course is equivalent to MGTS7702 Learning Organisations. Students wishing to gain credit must undertake all items of assessment. Please contact UQBS Student Administration via email: postgrad_enquiries@business.uq.edu.au to confirm your eligibility and to seek approval to obtain a credit prior to enrolling in the course. All other UQBS postgraduate students interested in enrolling in this course for credit, should contact UQBS Student Administration.

Please note all participants are required to complete a number of non-assessable items and are issued with a participation certificate upon completion of all non-assessable items.

Investment

$9,990* Fee includes expert tuition and translator costs, course materials (translated), meals, accommodation, cultural activities and internal transfers while attending the course. Please note, travel costs to and from Australia are not included in the course fee.
