Negotiation Skills for Today

This five-day course will enable managers to understand the basic functions of negotiating, how to communicate more effectively, and how to maximize the chances of success in dealing with other parties, either in industry or government.

Designed to introduce models and theories of business communication and negotiation, this course focuses on the practice and application of specific negotiating skills in conflict resolution. The course includes a mixture of lectures, simulated negotiations, and exercises to acquaint participants with the latest and most effective theories and models of negotiation.

Presenters

Dr Neil Paulsen
UQ Business School

Neil Paulsen is a Senior Lecturer in Organisation and Communication at UQ Business School. He has over 20 years industry experience as a successful senior manager and consultant in public, private, and community sector organisations. Neil's research includes the development of intergroup perspectives on organisational behaviour, change management, community engagement strategies, and innovation in teams. His research partners and clients include Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton, CSIRO, Federal Magistrates Court, NZ Telecom and Queensland Health.

Neil is a registered psychologist and a member of various professional associations including the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Management, the European Group for Organization Studies and the Australian Psychological Society.

Dr Yunxia Zhu
UQ Business School

Yunxia Zhu is a Senior Lecturer in Strategy at UQ Business School. She has over 20 years tertiary teaching experience in Australia, New Zealand and China, as well as considerable industry consultancy experience for international business organisations. Yunxia's research interests include international human resource management, cross-cultural management, international business negotiation, organisational discourse study, ethnicity and entrepreneurship, and Chinese organisational studies. She has written two books on business communication and training, has published extensively in international journals and book chapters. She has been Co-Editor of NZ Journal of Communication and serves on the editorial board of a number of business and communication journals.

Middle to senior managers from any industry within either the private or public sector, with an interest in successful negotiation.

This course will be delivered at UQ Business School Downtown, Level 19, Central Plaza One, 345 Queen Street, Brisbane.

Credit towards UQBS postgraduate studies

Students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership may apply to undertake this course for credit towards their postgraduate studies. This course is equivalent to MGTS7703 Negotiation Skills for Today. Students wishing to gain credit must undertake all items of assessment.

Please contact UQBS Student Administration via email to confirm your eligibility and to seek approval to obtain a credit prior to enrolling in the course. All other UQBS postgraduate students interested in enrolling in this course for credit, should contact UQBS Student Administration.

Assessment

Course assessment is available to students who wish to complete it. Information regarding the assessment will be made available during the course.

Please note all participants are required to complete a number of non-assessable items and are issued with a participation certificate upon completion of all non-assessable items.

Investment

$4,400 * Fee includes tuition, course materials, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea each day and a formal dinner on Thursday evening.
