Lifelong learning more than a slogan to MBA graduate

Tuesday 3 May 2005

After successfully completing his MBA last year, UQ Business School graduate and engineer Bryan Harris is already back to do a Masters in Applied Law.

Harris said the MBA had given him a different perspective and empowered him to confidently deal with most business issues.

He said, "I undertook a number of law subjects as electives in my MBA and now I want to further develop my skills, particularly in relation to construction-related contract law.".

Headhunted by Bassett Engineering while studying full-time, Harris said he thought the MBA was a significant attraction to the company - which was recently recognised in the BRW magazine Client Choice Awards as the nation's leading small engineering firm.

He said, "Bassett Engineering uses a four-part performance review process that weights learning and personal growth at 25%. You can't get a much stronger indication that the company values lifelong learning. Everyone talks about it but I wonder how many companies actually support learning and self development other than nominally.".

He said he hoped his sons, aged 11 and 13, have also benefited from seeing how much he valued - and enjoyed - continuing to acquire new skills and knowledge.

Principal in the Brisbane office Harris has been such a good advertisement for the benefits of further study that two of his colleagues are now enrolled in the UQ MBA.
