Celebrating International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the advancement of women in all areas of society, and to continue to advocate for change and gender parity.
To acknowledge this important day, Professor Julie Cogin welcomes the Business School community to join Dr Terry Fitzsimmons and herself to celebrate the progression of women, and be informed on the impact The University of Queensland Business School is making to shape the future of women in the workplace.
The evening will offer drinks, canapés and thought-provoking discussion. Julie Cogin will share her own research on what it takes for organisations to attract women and create a workplace culture where women want to stay and can flourish.
Dr Fitzsimmons, Managing Director of the Australian Gender Equality Council, will present on the progress of gender equality both nationally and internationally. He will also discuss breaking findings from recent studies he has conducted which analyse confidence in females as young as primary school age, and what influences career intentions.
After the insightful presentations, Professor Marta Indulska will facilitate a panel discussion and provide an opportunity for you to engage in Q&A.

Presenters
Professor Julie Cogin
Julie is the Dean and Head of The University of Queensland Business School, a role she took up in January 2018. Presently, she is the only female Dean of a Go8 Business School in Australia. Julie is a recognised thought leader in high-performing workplaces and corporate culture, having authored three books and published more than 30 articles on these topics.
In addition to holding multiple senior academic roles throughout her career, Julie has over 25 years’ experience consulting for many leading companies in Australia, Asia and the USA. She also currently serves as a non-executive director on the board of ASX listed company G8. In 2016, Julie was named as one of Australia’s Women of Influence by The Australian Financial Review and Westpac.
Dr Terry Fitzsimmons
Dr Terry Fitzsimmons is a Senior Lecturer in Leadership with the University of Queensland Business School. He is also a Chartered Accountant with over 30 years of practice. He is the director of the AIBE Centre for Gender Equality in the Workplace and Managing Director of the Australian Gender Equality Council (AGEC), a body whose members comprise of peak national bodies representing women across industry sectors in Australia.
His PhD in Leadership examined successful attributes of CEOs and differing pathways to CEO roles for men and women. In June 2015 Dr Fitzsimmons and Professor Callan released ‘Filling the Pool’ a major report into gender inequality in Western Australia and what government, organisations and individuals can do to address the issue. Dr Fitzsimmons makes extensive use of the work of Pierre Bourdieu and his framework for the examination of persistent intergenerational societal disparity. The concepts of field, capital, habitus and symbolic violence feature heavily in the studies into gender inequality conducted to date.
Dr Fitzsimmons has worked with many of Australia’s largest firms on their diversity programs and speaks regularly in Australia and overseas in the area of gender equality and inclusion. He has served as national and state presidents of not for profit bodies as well as a being a director on boards of Listed Public Companies in Australia and overseas.

Marta Indulska is a Professor and Leader of the Business Information Systems discipline at the UQ Business School, The University of Queensland, Australia. She teaches on topics related to the use and management of Information Systems and Information Technology in business, specifically with a focus on increasing operational efficiency and effectiveness. In 2017, she was a recipient of the UQ Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.
