An article by three UQ Business School academics about their research into sustainable investment has won a top international award.

The piece by Darren Lee, Robert Faff and Saphira Rekker won the Outstanding Paper Award at the Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2013, which are run by Emerald Group Publishing.

Their article – ‘Do high and low-ranked sustainability stocks perform differently?’ - was published in the International Journal of Accounting and Information Management last year. According to the publisher, it was ‘one of the most impressive pieces of work the team has seen throughout 2012’.

Robert, who is a Professor of Finance, and Darren, who is a Senior Lecturer, worked with Saphira, a postgraduate student, on the research project. They compared investment portfolios comprising firms with a high-ranked corporate social performance (CSP) and those with a low-ranked CSP over a period of ten years. They found little evidence to suggest any difference in performance between the two.

The research was a significant improvement on previous studies in a number of respects, including the data and rankings used.

Andrew Griffiths, Dean of UQ Business School, said: “Sustainable investment is an area that has been attracting increasing interest in the financial world. UQ Business School is at the forefront of research into the subject. We would like to congratulate the team on this latest success, which reflects the very high standard of their work.”
