Food AI: A game changer for Australia’s food and beverage sector

6 Jun 2024

Led by Professor Janet McColl-Kennedy from The University of Queensland Business School, Australia’s Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA) has developed a Food AI White Paper, Food AI: A game changer for Australia’s food and beverage sector, which provides 37 recommendations for businesses seeking to actively embrace responsible AI.

We are transitioning to a world in which robots and people will work side-by-side to produce and process our food, and where AI will enable us to accurately predict consumer preferences and then guide food design.

The white paper was developed by 65 contributors from academia, industry and government, including 20 academics from the UQ Business School.

An initiative of FaBA’s Innovation Pathways Program, the White Paper explores how Australian food and beverage businesses can best prepare for a future where the use of AI is inevitable.

'AI brings exciting opportunities for the food and beverage sector, such as AI-powered tools that can optimise agricultural productivity, improve food safety and design new foods that align well to consumer tastes and preferences,' Professor McColl-Kennedy said.

Professor McColl-Kennedy said there would be challenges and emphasised the need for clear policy settings, responsible implementation and transparency relating to AI.

White paper launch

Earlier this year, Professor Aidan Byrne launched the white paper at Customs House, Brisbane.

The launch was followed by an engaging industry-academia panel discussion, where Professor Janet McColl-Kennedy, Professor Ashish Sinha and others discussed the challenges of implementing AI in the food and beverage sector, and tips for successful implementation.
