ARC Linkage Project grants – 2023 Round 2 Business School researchers Associate Professor Terrance Fitzsimmons, Dr Ree Jordan, Professor Victor Callan, and Dr Yiqiong Li have been awarded Australian Research Council Linkage Project grant funding. Dr Fitzsimmons, Dr Jordan, Professor Callan, and their colleague Dr Miriam Yates will conduct research on amplifying the leadership and voices of Indigenous women environmental rangers, while Dr Li will be an investigator on a University of South Australia-led project on cultivating systemic safety to prevent workplace sexual harassment. The researchers are among 10 UQ research teams that received more than $6.5 million in funding in round 2 of the 2023 ARC Linkage Projects scheme. | |

| Fulbright scholar set to broaden research in US Congratulations to Dr Dewan Rahman who has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. He will travel to the United States to further his research on insider trading and governance. “My research experience at the University of Michigan will equip me to do more applied research on insider trading. Research in this domain will contribute positively for the Australian capital market development,” Dr Rahman said. The Fulbright Scholarship Program gives Australian researchers the opportunity to take part in an academic and cultural exchange at a US institution. Dr Rahman was one of four UQ researchers awarded a Fulbright Scholarship. |

| DECRA grant success for UQ Business School researchers Dr Saphira Rekker and Dr Tapani Rinta-Kahila have secured funding from the ARC Discovery Early Career Research Award scheme. The DECRA scheme provides focused research support for emerging researchers. Dr Rekker’s project will examine misleading corporate climate pledges to implement a global platform where corporate Paris Compliance information will be shared transparently. Dr Rinta-Kahila will investigate the impact of artificial intelligence on the development and retention of essential skills in workers. A big congratulations to both. |

Universitas 21 Award Winner Miriam Moeller from International Business was presented a Universitas 21 (U21) Award this week. The awards are designed to celebrate the achievements of individuals or teams at U21 member institutions whose work has crossed borders and furthered the network’s principles of internationalisation. This award was a recognition of Miriam’s sustained work to support our students to become champions of global mobility, and for her impactful research in this area. Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project 2023 grant We’re proud to announce that Associate Professor Martin Edwards and Professor Tyler Okimoto have received an ARC Discovery Project 2023 grant for their project “Well-being and Productivity in Metricised Employee Performance Systems”. Martin and Tyler will collaborate with Professor Frederik Anseel and Associate Professor Stacey Parker on this research. UQ Research and Innovation Week award winners Congratulations to our 2022 UQ Research and Innovation Week award winners. At the UQ Research and Innovation Awards for Excellence on 13 September, Dr Felix Septianto received a UQ Foundation Research Excellence Award (FREA) for his project “The Role of Media Coverage in Encouraging Behaviours with Positive Environmental Impact”. Two days later, at the UQ Research Partnerships and Translation Awards, Dr Cassandra Chapman (research lead) and partner More Strategic received the Innovative Partnerships Award for the project “Understanding donor psychology and improving fundraising effectiveness”. Tourism Panel on Climate Change We’re proud to announce that Professor Bob McKercher and Dr Ya-Yen Sun are among 32 experts from around the world to join the newly formed independent international organisation, TPCC (Tourism Panel on Climate Change). TPCC is designed to assess and mobilise rapidly evolving knowledge on the complex interactions between tourism and climate change. Bob and Ya-Yen are passionate researchers in the areas of tourism sustainability, nature-based tourism and cultural tourism. | |

UQ-led Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA) project We are proud to announce the UQ-led Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA) project has been awarded $50 million of funding under the Australian Government’s Trailblazer Universities Program. This represents the largest single funding allocation that UQ has received for its research. The project is worth $178 million involving 19 partners including 3 research institutions (QUT, USQ and CSIRO) along with the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, and our industry partners. UQ Foundation Research Excellence Award Congratulations to Dr Ya-Yen Sun, who received a UQ Foundation Research Excellence Award (FREA) this week. This award scheme recognises demonstrated excellence and promise of future success in research, as well as the leadership potential of individual young researchers in their fields. As part of the award, Ya-Yen will undertake research addressing the best way to understand, assess and measure the carbon footprint of tourism at a national level. | |

UQ initiative wins international tourism research award UQ’s ‘Low Harm Hedonism Initiative’ has received the 2021 Through Research award at the Alimara CETT Awards in Barcelona, Spain. Led by ARC Laureate Fellow Professor Sara Dolnicar, this initiative aims to entice people to behave in more environmentally sustainable ways in enjoyment-focused contexts (such as staying in a hotel while on holiday). 2020 Ericsson Innovation Award winners, Tom Bizzell and Jack Anderson Current students Tom Bizzell (Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Law) and Jack Anderson (Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)), have taken out first place at the 2020 Ericsson Innovation Awards, claiming a prize of €25,000 Euros (A$40,000). The annual global competition calls on students to set major change in motion by addressing current and future climate challenges. The pair’s software startup, WakeShare, uses bow-wave sharing as an efficient way to improve shipping fuel efficiency. Congratulations! | |

UQ Honorary Professor David Gann’s new appointment at the University of Oxford Congratulations to Professor David Gann, UQ Honorary Professor and Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Oxford’s Said Business School, who has been appointed as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Development and External Affairs) at the University of Oxford. Professor Gann has been visiting UQ Business School for nearly 20 years, where he works closely with Professor Mark Dodgson AO. Their most recent book is Philanthropy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship: An Introduction, and they are currently writing two new books: China’s Innovation Machine (with Marina Zhang), and The Hottest Place in the Universe. | |

Lara’s winning innovation, Hirely, is a subscription-based designer clothing rental platform for young professional women that aims to reduce fashion consumption and make fashionable garments available to everyone. Global Business Challenge: Commendation for UQ team Congratulations to Smart Harvest, the UQ team that received a commendation for their work during the recent Global Business Challenge. The team, including Dr Zhong Xiang Cheah, Ms Lusi Ou, Ms Xin Gao and Mr James Nguyen, made the finals after competing against around 160 teams from around the world. Mentored by Dr Belinda Wade and Victor Galea from SAFS, the team developed a program to minimise food waste by enabling clarity of the supply/demand for particular crop types for agricultural producers. | |
Advertising Capstone Challenge: Business School students come first at national competition Five students from UQ Business School took out first place for the second year running at the annual Advertising Capstone Challenge. Charlotte Wright, Samuel Jackson, Chelsea Johnson, Tom Clark and Elise Logan formed team ‘Ignite’ and won the competition with their innovative pitch connecting millennials with the Suzuki brand. Dr Daisung Jang – 2020 NTR-Peterson Research Grant recipient Dr Daisung Jang obtained a 2020 NTR-Peterson Research Grant for his proposal “Validation of the Negotiation Behavior Inventory” and was awarded funding of $9803. Negotiation and Team Resources (NTR) are a not for profit corporation founded to encourage scholars undertaking research and teaching in the areas of negotiation, conflict, dispute resolution and teams. | |
Professor Jarzabkowski appointed Fellow of the Academy of Management Professor of Management, Paula Jarzabkowski is one of a select few Australian scholars to be elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Management. The Academy cited her exceptional contributions to the science and practice of management as a key factor for her nomination, with a reputation for ground-breaking and highly impactful research on strategically important organisational issues. Commerce student is a finalist in Australian Accounting Awards Congratulations to Bachelor of Commerce student and UQ Business Association President Hannah Olsson who was a finalist in the Australian Accounting Awards 2020 by AccountantsDaily for Accounting Student of the Year. Professor Janet McColl-Kennedy, Professor of Marketing and Director of Research - Finalist Janet’s paper titled “Gaining Customer Experience: Insights that Matter,” was one of three finalists selected for the best Journal of Service Research paper. The Journal of Service Research is the lead journal in customer service thought, with a 5-year impact factor of 7.067 and in the 99th percentile (Scopus). | |
Isabella Ye, Casual Academic (Tourism) and Charissa Gawn (Bachelor of Commerce student) - National Innovation Games 2020 Isabella, in collaboration with Binna Burra Lodge and an interdisciplinary team of experts including Bachelor of Commerce student Charissa Gawn, won first prize at the National Innovation Games (June 2020), providing them with of $10,000 of startup funds. Isabella also received a prize as best presenter on the day for her pitch, discussing digital solutions to engage customers and community, and industry issues associated with bushfire recovery. | |

Business School researcher awarded the Rama Krishna Sastry Pappu Memorial Prize Dr Danni Zheng has been awarded the Rama Krishna Sastry Pappu Memorial Prize in Business for 2019. Professor Roy Ballantyne was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa. Roy has been involved in undertaking environmental and heritage research in South Africa for the past 40 years. As a born and raised South African, Roy started his academic journey in Environmental and Geographical Science at the University of Cape Town, before emigrating to Australia 30 years ago. | |
