Honours FAQs

To obtain admission to the Bachelor of Business Management (Honours) program, you must complete the Bachelor of Business Management program requirements (or equivalent) or Bachelor of International Hotel and Tourism Management/Bachelor of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management program requirements (or equivalent) with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 5.50 on UQ’s 7-point scale.

For the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) program you must complete the Bachelor of Commerce program requirements (or equivalent) with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 5.50 on UQ’s 7-point scale. No other criteria is taken into account to be more competitive for admission.

For students completing double degree undergraduate programs at UQ, the GPA for admission to the Bachelor of Business Management (Honours) or Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) is calculated based on courses related to the relevant undergraduate degree components only.

Entry into the honours programs is subject to your final cumulative GPA from your undergraduate program. If you are still completing your undergraduate program when applying, we will likely provide a conditional offer subject to your GPA being finalised.

No, you can take a break after completing your undergraduate studies, however, you must commence in the Honours program within two years of graduating from your undergraduate degree.

There are typically 15–30 students enrolled in the two honours programs (combined) each semester

An honours program consists of an additional year of study during which you’ll build on the skills and knowledge gained during your undergraduate program by completing a self-directed research project. Completing an honours program can provide a pathway to a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) study.

UQ Business School master’s by coursework programs are designed for those with no previous knowledge in the field of study, who are seeking formal qualifications for professional development or change of career direction.

Students who obtain a cumulative program GPA (across coursework and research thesis) of at least 6.20 in their honours program will be eligible for Class I Honours. There are no restrictions on how many of each class of honours we can award each semester.

UQ offers a range of scholarships, and HECS-HELP is available to eligible students, giving you financial support to invest in your future. 

As the honours program is an advanced additional year program, it is recommended you only complete your thesis in a field of study you are familiar with. However, students do have the opportunity to explore cross-disciplinary aspects in their electives and research.

The honours program is delivered full-time across two semesters.

Students will attend 3–4 seminars each week. The thesis component of your honours program does not require class hours, however, you are encouraged to schedule regular meetings with your academic supervisors to ensure you meet thesis milestones. 

No. The honours program is time-intensive so we do not recommend full-time work commitments in addition to your studies.

Students have exclusive access to the Paul Rogers Honours Facility during their honours program. This is a computer laboratory located in the Colin Clark Building. In addition, students have access to UQ’s wide range of study spaces.

No. Once you start in the honours program, we will facilitate opportunities for you to meet potential supervisors during Orientation.

You will complete one or two elective courses alongside the second part of your research thesis, with a maximum of 3–6 class contact hours.

You can apply for an honours program at the Business School, however we will need to assess whether your program is equivalent to UQ’s Bachelor of Business Management, Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of International Hotel and Tourism Management/Bachelor of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management to ensure you meet the honours admission requirements.

You can choose your own honours thesis topic, but it’s a good idea to discuss your idea with potential supervisors or the honours program leader to make sure it’s a feasible project that can be completed within the duration of your honours program, which is approximately 10 months.

If you’re not sure what topic you want to focus on, you can access lists of potential topics and supervisors during the meet and greet honours orientation.

You can get into a PhD program at UQ (and other top universities) after completing the honours program, as long as you meet other entry requirements (for example, if you graduate with at least second-class honours for a UQ PhD program, and other universities may require you to meet their GMAT requirements).
