The Emerging Technology Research Hub brings together researchers from across UQ Business School to understand how emerging technologies reshape organisations, markets and economic activity.

From artificial intelligence and data systems to advanced manufacturing, energy technologies and space infrastructure, emerging technologies are transforming how organisations innovate, compete and create value. Our research examines how organisations adopt and commercialise new technologies, how business environments shape opportunities for innovation and growth, and how governance frameworks influence technological development.

Working with industry, government and international research partners, the Hub provides evidence-based insights that help organisations navigate technological change and translate emerging technologies into business and economic value.

Innovation, transformation and commercialisation

Emerging technologies create opportunities for new products, services, business models and organisational capabilities. Our research examines how organisations—from early-stage start-ups to established enterprises—innovate with emerging technologies and translate them into commercial outcomes. We study digital innovation, technology commercialisation, organisational transformation and new venture creation.

Opportunities, ecosystems and business environments

Technological breakthroughs alone do not create industries. Innovation depends on supportive business environments, infrastructure and ecosystems that enable organisations to scale new technologies. Our research investigates how opportunity structures form around emerging technologies, how ecosystems develop, and how organisations leverage these conditions to create new sectors and value chains.

Governance, accountability and policy

Emerging technologies raise complex questions around regulation, risk and responsible use. Our research examines how technologies such as artificial intelligence and data systems are governed through policy frameworks, regulation, standards and institutional arrangements. We work with policymakers and industry to understand how governance can support innovation while managing technological risks.
