Australian pens innovation guide

25 Mar 2010
University of Queensland Business School innovation expert, Professor Mark Dodgson, has authored a guide to innovation that will be accessible to all readers. He has taken a concise and original look at what innovation is and why it affects us all so profoundly in Innovation: A Very Short Introduction, which was written in partnership with Professor David Gann, Head of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Imperial College London. Oxford University Press commissioned the book as the first in a new business series to be added to their highly successful Very Short Introductions, which have sold more than two million copies worldwide. Innovation - the ways ideas are made valuable - is an increasingly topical issue, according to Professor Dodgson. "Innovation is hugely challenging and failure is common, but it's essential to our social and economic progress so it's not surprising that many people are interested in understanding more about the topic," he said. "We explain how innovation occurs, who stimulates it, how it is pursued, and what its outcomes are, both positive and negative." The pair also considered the extent to which innovation might be used to deal with the global challenges we all face in the future, such as sustainability. IBM Senior Vice President, Linda Sanford, said: "Innovation has always been fundamental to leadership, be it in the public or private arena and this insightful book teaches us lessons from the successes of the past, and spotlights the challenges and the opportunities for innovation as we move from the industrial age to the knowledge economy." The book will be launched on 25 March 2010 at a special presentation at Christ Church College, Oxford University as part of the Oxford Literary Festival.
