Australia Day Honours for BEL alumni and staff

Professor Neal Ashkanasy received a Medal (OAM)

UQ Business School and the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law congratulates the BEL alumni and staff recently honoured with 2017 Australia Day Awards. They have made invaluable contributions to creating change in their communities and the world:

Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division

Professor Neal Ashkanasy, a researcher from UQ Business School, for service to tertiary education, to psychology and to the community. Professor Ashkanasy is a UQ alumnus: he has a Diploma in Computer Science (1972), Bachelor of Arts First Class Honours (1982), and a Doctor of Philosophy – Psychology (1989). Professor Ashkanasy is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Mr John Ferguson, a past director of University of Queensland Press, recognised for service to sailing and to the community. Mr Ferguson has a UQ Bachelor of Commerce (1966) and an Associate in Commerce (1966).

Mr John Johnstone, honorary treasurer of the University of Queensland Rifle Club, for service to rifle shooting. Mr Johnstone has a UQ Bachelor of Commerce (1974) and a Graduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting (1976).

Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia

Mr William “Bill” Bowness, a generous donor to UQ who gave $1 million in 2014 to establish Australia’s first Telerehabilitation Clinic, recognised for distinguished service to the visual and performing arts through philanthropic contributions, fundraising and advisory roles, and to the building and construction industry. Mr Bowness is a UQ alumnus, with a Certificate in Provisional Accountancy (1967), a Bachelor of Commerce (1968), an Associate in Commerce (1969), and a Doctor of Business (2015)

Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia

Mr Ian Klug, chair of Brisbane Marketing, for significant service to the business sector, to economic development in Queensland, to accountancy, and to the community. Mr Klug is a UQ alumnus with a Bachelor of Arts (1979) and a Bachelor of Commerce (1981)

Mr Allan Pidgeon, director of FA Pidgeon & Son Pty Ltd, for significant service to the community through a range of roles, particularly to the promotion of the Australian national flag. Mr Pidgeon has a UQ Bachelor of Commerce (1979) and Bachelor of Laws (1981)
