UQ Business School academics have been recognised at The University of Queensland's 2013 UQ Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and Internationalisation ceremony last night.
A 180-strong crowd including the State Minister for Education, Training and Employment, the honourable John-Paul Langbroek, attended the event at Customs House.
UQ President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Høj said the annual teaching awards acknowledged dedicated and inspirational teachers and teaching programs
"These annual awards are bestowed on the University's most outstanding teachers, who through their excellence in teaching and devotion to the student experience will affect the professional lives of students long after graduation," Professor Høj said.
“UQ attracts the best teachers who have a desire to share their expertise with our increasingly discerning students and to help create new knowledge about our world and how to solve its mysteries and challenges.
"The staff who have been honoured with teaching awards are outstanding mentors who add meaning and value to what they teach and help produce well rounded graduates that have the UQ Advantage."
Professor Andrew Griffiths, Dean of UQ Business School, added: “Polly Parker, as representative of the MBA Program, April Wright, Peter Clutterbuck and Yunxia Zhu, were justly acknowledged and recognised for their excellence in teaching and contribution to learning, which is a real tribute to the School.
“It is great to see Polly and the MBA team recognised for their outstanding contribution to the MBA program and all the successes it has recently achieved.
I am also proud to acknowledge April for her exceptional teaching and for the efforts she has made at heightening the teaching quality and curriculum at UQ Business School. It is an outstanding achievement for April to also be recognised by the Australian Government's Office for Learning and Teaching.”
The awards ceremony is a highlight of UQ's Teaching and Learning Week (28 October – 1 November).
This year the University acknowledged five individuals with UQ Awards for Teaching Excellence and three groups with UQ Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning.
Five people were also recognised with Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning and one Commendation for Teaching Excellence was awarded.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Joanne Wright said the awards were UQ’s most visible recognition of the teaching accomplishments of the University’s leading educators.
“UQ’s award-winning, innovative teaching programmes take learning beyond the lecture theatre and introduce students to actual industry challenges essential to their learning,” Professor Wright said.
“Our teachers are absolutely critical to The University of Queensland’s reputation for being a highly sought after, world-class university and I offer my warmest congratulations to each of the winners for the wonderful job that they do and the dedication they bring to their work.
“As well as acknowledging teaching excellence, these awards are also a way for the University and students to thank our brilliant teachers and educational program developers.”

In addition to the UQ teaching excellence awards, three UQ lecturers were recognised this year by the Australian Government's Office for Learning and Teaching and were awarded Citations for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning in the Australia Awards for University Teaching.
They are Dr April Wright, UQ Business School, Mr Carl Sherwood, School of Economics and Dr Allison Mandrusiak, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.
